With safety at risk, we put the concert on hold and shifted our twice-weekly rehearsals online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the uncertainty and fear\u2014and not knowing if the concert could happen at all\u2014something deeply powerful emerged&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/jerusalemyouthchorus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerusalemyouthchorus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image.png 600w, https:\/\/jerusalemyouthchorus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This past Monday, our singers gathered\u2014across screens, borders, and realities\u2014for a virtual rehearsal that became one of our most extraordinary moments of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though we couldn\u2019t be together in person, we were united in purpose\u2014rooted in resilience, lifted by song, and held in the presence of someone whose music has long steadied us: vocal activist, composer, and musical-spiritual leader Melanie DeMore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Melanie is the composer of &#8220;Standing Stone&#8221;\u2014a song we teach each year on retreat before the hard conversations begin, a song that anchors us in connection that we call on in times of need. This was one of those times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"682\" height=\"374\" class=\"wp-block-cover__image-background wp-image-44\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/jerusalemyouthchorus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-1.png\" data-object-fit=\"cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerusalemyouthchorus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-1.png 682w, https:\/\/jerusalemyouthchorus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-1-300x165.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\" \/><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-large-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/63VT0uUtF8I\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/63VT0uUtF8I\">Hear JYC sing &#8221; Standing Stone &#8221; together on a retreat.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#25a3a3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">&#8220;I will be your standing stone, I will stand by you.&#8221;<\/mark><\/strong><br><br>Melanie shared the meaning behind each of the three harmony lines of Standing Stone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The melody: A declaration of rootedness and presence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The upper harmony: A fierce loyalty\u2014don\u2019t try me or us. I\u2019ll stand by my friends no matter what!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The lower harmony: The one that lifts. I can hold you, support you, and raise you up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#25a3a3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">She reminded us: we can\u2019t always control what happens around us. But we can choose to show up. And we can sing.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is precisely what we did.&nbsp;Melanie also led us in the spiritual, \u201cThis Little Light of Mine,\u201d clapping and moving to rhythms passed down through Gullah traditions\u2014 where enslaved people, stripped of drums, used broomsticks against the floors of their stilted houses, transforming their entire home into a percussion instrument. Melanie, a master of this tradition, told us, \u201cjust as the Gullah people made music from what was within and around them, you too have everything you need in you and around you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/jerusalemyouthchorus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerusalemyouthchorus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-2.png 800w, https:\/\/jerusalemyouthchorus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-2-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/jerusalemyouthchorus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-2-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:#25a3a3\" class=\"has-inline-color has-base-color\">Unfortunately, the world outside our end-of-year zoom gathering told a different story entirely. . .<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These songs don\u2019t just carry melody. They carry memory. They carry the human need to be seen. To be witnessed. To be whole.&nbsp; But during this unfolding of healing and hope with Melanie,&nbsp;<strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#25a3a3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">one of our Palestinian members unmuted to say, \u201cPray for me\u2014I just arrived at Bab al-Amoud<\/mark><\/strong>&nbsp;[Damascus Gate: a frequent flashpoint of violence that also serves as the main entrance to the Old City from East Jerusalem].\u201d Moments later, he was stopped, questioned, and beaten by an Israeli police officer\u2014on his way home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That whiplash\u2014that jarring juxtaposition\u2014is the reality our singers live in. One moment, they are held close in harmony. The next, they are pulled aside and attacked.&nbsp;<strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#25a3a3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">But JYC is always there to lift them up again, as time after time, they choose to sing.&nbsp;And show up for each other.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/jerusalemyouthchorus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-3-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerusalemyouthchorus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-3-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/jerusalemyouthchorus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-3-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/jerusalemyouthchorus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-3-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/jerusalemyouthchorus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-3.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#25a3a3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Be a Standing Stone for Our Singers<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Melanie reminded us on Monday, \u201cIf your left foot isn&#8217;t resisting and your right foot isn&#8217;t uplifting, you&#8217;re not walking the walk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, we will now be able to meet again in person for an intimate end-of-year gathering for our singers and their families tomorrow, which will surely be full of hugs, tears, and laughter, as we celebrate our singers\u2019 courage and resilience, and recommit to that resisting and uplifting\u2014together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now, our singers are walking that walk\u2014in a world that is burning. And we are inviting you to walk with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#25a3a3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">If you know someone who needs a flicker of light\u2014someone feeling numb, exhausted, or overwhelmed\u2014we invite you to forward this message to them.&nbsp;<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Help them witness what becomes possible when young people choose a different way, when they demonstrate what the world could be.<br><br><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#25a3a3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Word of mouth is our strongest amplifier.
